Front to rear footpeg conversions...

Hey Guys.... I ride a 125cc cruiser that im in the process of rebuilding..

right now my foot pegs are still some what cruiser styled/ on the front of the frame because im having trouble with figuring out how to change them...

Can you guys give me an idea where to buy or how to build rear sets that would work for a 6ft guy such as myself on a 125cc cruiser frame?

Im having problems with the whole idea of a reversed gear lever?

Hi Bud and welcome, in the 'old days' they used to just reverse the footpeg bracket and gear/brake levers. Without seeing your bike and set up it's difficult to offer advice. First off you can reduce the picture size and improve the resolution by using a photo hosting site such as Photobucket. It's free and
very easy to use.

The second issue is converting a cruiser's foot-forward controls, you can't just turn them round like you would with a commuter style bike.

You will need to look at the exhaust layout as the upsweep is going to determine where you can reallistically site the brake pedal and foot rest. Your going to have to make dome sort of bracket in that area for the foot peg and the same the other side. As it's a drum brake rear you need to keep the push rod set-up (hydraulic/disc brakes are much easier because you can be flexible with the hoses, no pun intended)

Then you need to consider the gear linkage on the other side. An old trick with the commuter bikes is to put rear set footpegs on and simply turn the lever round so you get a reverse gear sequence (1-up/4-down instead of 1-down/4-up) takes a bit of getting used to but it works!

I really don't think you are going to be able to salvage much from your current set-up, so you have to consider possibly fabricating or buying new foot rests and some sort of mechanism to operate the controls, you may also have to junk part or even all of the exhaust.

What you are trying to achieve is not impossible, but tbh cruisers don't readily lend themselves to cafe conversions, the frames normally have raked heads, you've hit the foot-forward issue, and if you're determined to cafe something as your first project you might want to consider saving yourself a lot of grief by selling or swapping what looks like a nice wee cruiser for a standard style of bike.

I can probably build a custom exhaust to fit which ever set ups i go for so that isnt really an issue.


Fabricating my own foot rests can also be done if i spent enough time on it but from what you say i will probably try to find a better bike to convert...

Yeah, I wasn't trying to put you off, but there's nowt worse than getting a bike stripped then losing heart
when it doesn't come together. E-bay is littered with projects where people have gone so far then lost
time or patience or interest, or just plain found the job beyond them!

Can you not utilse the rear footpeg mount ?? will give a proper race stance, obviously the gear change rod will need to be fabricated and rear brake set up adjusted

I think Oncas may be on to something there, looking at this there is definately a useable bracket, you'd just need to sort out linkages




I'm not saying it would be easy and you'd deffo need to modify the exhaust, but it's do-able.

aint one for pissing on anybodys parade but to turn a marauder into a cafe style would be a task even for a experenced builder ,but there aint no rule book mate and oncas sololution sounds bang on using the rear pegs
as paul said you have a nice little seller there as is and buy another 125 with more of a retro stance possibly a cg125

just to complicate things have you concidered keeping the forwards as they are and perhaps doing something like this i know its the 125s bigger bro a 650 savage but would be easy to transform it to a nice little chop

i have thought of using the rear foot peg mounts for the bike but dont really want a reversed gearbox because

a) im still new to biking and just got used to 1 down 4 up and
b) a 125cc cafe racer would make a good learner bike that actually looks good which makes it sellable...


this may be to much for me to figure out but could any of you guys think of a way to keep the gearbox set up, some sort of gear selecter reversal i can build?


i like the chopper style but prefer the look of a cafe racer

It's difficult without seeing the gear selector shaft, from the pictures it looks like it sits quite a way forward under the box? In which case you will need something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Rearsets-footpegs-foot-rest-fits-Suzuki-Yamaha-Honda-Kawasaki-scooter-/270973572902?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3f17489726 where the extender rod in the bottom of the photo would sit undet the footpeg and connect to the selector shaft.
