Z1000 cafe/brat Almost done Empty
PostSubject: Z1000 cafe/brat Almost done   Z1000 cafe/brat Almost done EmptyTue Apr 17, 2012 4:49 am

Having been a follower of other people's builds for so long - and taking the fettling of my Ducati Sport Classic cafe racer to extremes - I've finally dived-in to create my own 1970s build, based on an imported 78 KZ1000 Ltd.

The donor bike was cheap and this was a low budget job, so I haven't stripped the whole frame or rebuilt the engine from scratch like some of you, but she's clean, run's beautifully, and with new lines, MC and levers, the brakes even work! - although it was a b*stard to get the Raask rearsets to work with the gear lever, and Rex at UMC had to fabricate a linkage from a BMW lever and Guzzi rose joint...

Here's where she is now, after lots of expert work, chopping and welding by Rex and Anita at Untitled Motorcycles/Victory in Camden.

Here's what she looked like when I got her.

And here's how I want the tank to be painted.

I hope you all approve...

I'm not sure about the inverted bars and might go for clipons instead. Any advice on fitting. I assume I need 35mm clamps?

I'll do a full story on www.thebikeshed.cc when she's all done.

very nice dutch brat style seat looks great i think the bars work as well, are they upside down back to front street bars??you could use ace or adjustable ace bars if you didnt wont to much of a stretch

whats the front mudguard youve used?

Hey - glad you like.

The seat was made to my design spec (via a carboard 3D template) by Glenn Mogel through Redmax Speedshop, the bars are Renthal flat-ish unbraced MX bars mounted upside down (we all used to do this back in the late 80s), which is a look I prefer to Ace bars - or I'd go full clip-ons - as I don't mind the stretch (My Duc is very low) ... and the mudguards were cast-offs we found leaning against a wall at Victory Motorcycles in Camden, cut down and bashed into shape to accommodate the subframe at the back, with a custom bracket at the front.

Very nice job Dutch, subtle, nice cross between cafe and flat-tracker, particularly like the seat.
